ETS Talk 16: D’Arcy Norman Visits
This week Cole, Allan, and Brad have the pleasure of hosting D’Arcy Norman from the University of Calgary in the 210F Studio … well, he comes in via iChat AV, but that’s close enough. D’Arcy is an international Edu Blogger Rock Star who spends most of his time creating opportunities to engage those in educational contexts with emerging technologies. We spend most of the show talking about how to get strategic about selecting technologies that can have an impact on the educational process and how we look at scaling them. Clearly we are all still talking Twitter, but the new item this week is Yahoo Pipes. We hop you enjoy!

Open Minds: Web 2.0 in the Higher Education Enterprise
Tomorrow I’ll be presenting at the Open Minds series about Web 2.0 in the Higher Education Enterprise. This is a two hour session for people in PSU Outreach — I originally expected an hour and an audience of about 25 … we’re now around 50 and the time has obviously grown. The presentation is a mash-up of a bunch of stuff I’ve done in the past with a little twist to the delivery. I want to be able to make the point that PSU is now in the middle of the Web 2.0 space and delivering quality services to our populations.
If you want to take a peek at the presentation, here is a 19 MB Flash version, and here it as a downloadable PDF.
ETS Talk Podcast 15: Getting our Twitter On
Cole, Brad, Allan, and Chris return to the ETS Talk 210 F Studio to bring you Episode 15. This week we get our Twitter on and discuss the implications for an instant communication tool. We respond to two, count them, two pieces of listener mail as well. All in all a good show.

What is Good with Twitter
Over the last several days Twitter has crept into our lives in huge way. Is it good that a critical mass are now watching each other? I have my thoughts and I will post them over at my personal blog, but I ask you as a PSU person, what do you think? There have been new connections made via this silly little piece of technology, but when do too many people spoil the party? Is this even a worthwhile question? Just something to throw out to the community … please don’t make us look dumb by not commenting — if you do, we’ll just delete the post and move on
Let us know.
PSU Podcasting in the News
Two pieces of news emerged from PSU on the same day about the Podcasts at Penn State project. The first was an article in the Daily Collegian, the student newspaper on campus, cleverly titled, “Lectures could be available for iPods.” I probably would have said that lectures are available, but I’m not the editor. It is a good piece that represents the project well. It was nice to see that the reported not only got the story from ETS, but also a couple of the faculty we are working with. Always good to hear that voice come through.
The other was in the form of a news story on the local CBS Nightly News last night. I took the bullet for being on-air, but again they did a good job representing the project even if they did focus in on the Apple partnership a little strongly. I guess you go with the coolness factor. Either way it is nice to see a little bit of the work we are doing get some press … next time maybe someone else can be the on air personality … I have more of a face for podcasting. You can view the clip below.
One thing I did notice about both features is how they were very interested in how podcasting could enable students to skip class. We really aren’t seeing that result at the moment, but that is one of the reasons we are still in pilot.
