FACAC 2008 Survey Results
Several of us in ETS have been citing the Faculty Advisory Committee on Academic Computing (FACAC) 2008 numbers. The latest survey looked at faculty, staff, and students for the first time in its history. Thanks in large part to the work of Vicki Williams, we now have a clearer picture of what the Penn State community has to say about its use of technology. There are so many insights to be gained from the 2008 FACAC, so it is definitely worth a read. I blogged my (just about) top ten issues for TLT, ITS, and Penn State in general not too long ago and would be interested to hear your thoughts … grab the PDF of the 2008 FACAC survey results.
Service Sheet: Teaching with Technology Certificate
The Teaching with Technology (TWT) certificate program enables graduate student teaching assistants to strengthen their educational technology capabilities. Through the free program, graduate students apply existing technology skills in course instruction, acquire new skills, and develop a philosophy about teaching with technology.
Participants in the program assemble an online portfolio highlighting their knowledge and skills, under the guidance of departmental representatives. Examples of completed portfolios can be viewed at http://ets.tlt.psu.edu/twt/portfolios/.
Upon approval of this portfolio, students receive a certificate from The Graduate School. This certificate is valuable when seeking teaching positions, as employers are looking for personnel who have strong technology skills and can make decisions about appropriate use of technologies in education.
Our Service Sheets have been designed for you to print and share with others. It will provide you with the main details around this service and should give you all the information you may need to begin taking advantage of this Penn State resource.

TLT CoffeeRead: How much IT education does an MBA need?
How much IT education does an MBA need?
With apologies to any senior management in the enterprise world who stumble upon this, I have found that business executives are not informed on IT issues, often to their detriment. What do you think? Does PSU (Smeal College of Business) encourage MBA candidates to learn more about IT?
TLT Coffee Read: Is Google App’s security up to snuff?
Are Google security practices up to snuff?
“Talk about being in the clouds. It’s incredibly difficult to know how secure any of Google’s in-the-cloud applications are given the company’s propensity for disclosing very little about what they use, when they patch and when they update. Baseline investigates.”
Given how often we are using Google Apps these days, this is an interesting read.
ETS Talk 45: Personhood
Cole, Allan, Chris, and Brad welcome Penn State CIO, Kevin Morooney to discuss community, identity, and all sorts of other things. We spend time sharing some thoughts on the Berkman@10 conference Cole and Chris attended last week and reflect on why it was such a powerful experience. Kevin engaged us in a discussion of why Digital Commons and other new approaches on campus are so powerful for the teaching and learning landscape. Finally we discussed how we should be leaning on identity to create new opportunities for our own community. It was a great time and we hope to have Kevin back in the future.
