May 14, 2008 update

An update was applied to ANGEL during the maintenance window this morning.

  • There was a problem that caused My Files to be the directory in which files were stored when uploaded by the HTML editor in a course or group. This has been fixed and the files will now be stored in the course.
  • If an editor attempts to link one item on the lessons tab to multiple gradebook assignments a warning message will now be displayed.

Giving full credit for taking a quiz

A question that seems to pop up regularly is how to give automatically give full credit to a student for taking a quiz regardless of the score earned. It occurred to me this morning that this can be done using a formula on the gradebook assignment for quizzes and SCORM items.

There are two methods:

1. If not using "treat ungraded assignments as zero," simply insert a 1 into the formula for the assignment. This will make all of the scores for that assignment automatically evaluate to 100%.

2. Insert either of the following into the formula for the assignment:
{ASSIGNMENT:USER:PERCENTAGE}/{ASSIGNMENT:USER:PERCENTAGE}
{ASSIGNMENT:USER:SCORE} /{ASSIGNMENT:USER:SCORE}

This will evaluate to 0% if the student earned 0 points, or 100% if they earned any points.

With method 1, a student who takes the quiz but earns 0 points will receive full credit and students who do not take the quiz will receive no credit as long as "treat ungraded items as 0" is not checked in the gradebook preferences. If it is, everyone in the course will receive full credit.

With method 2, students who either earn 0 points or do not take the quiz will both receive a score of 0.

This doesn't address the need some instructors have to automatically grade drop boxes on submission or the need to assign full credit if earning more than a certain score. However, it might help out in a few circumstances.

If anyone can poke holes in this, please let me know!

(For those who are from other institutions, I am aware that this can be done with Agents. However, we do not use that feature here at PSU).

January 16, 2008 update

Please contact ANGEL Support with any questions.

General

  • several backend fixes and enhancements
  • the "high security" setting is now for quizzes and surveys in all classes. You (and the eTesting Center) no longer need to request that this be enabled if you use the eTesting Center. Please note that this setting makes a quiz available only from the eTesting Center. It should not be used unless you are giving a quiz in the eTesting Center as your quizzes will not be available to your students.
  • zip archives generated by the Download Submission tool in drop boxes will now have a .zip extension in Firefox
  • a situation in which a person's name might not be correctly pulled into ANGEL was fixed

CSCS

  • several minor bug fixes
  • contact information for ANGEL Support was updated
  • a bug that caused line breaks to not be shown in reviewer comments in the print view and view history is resolved
  • additional instructions requested by the Faculty Senate were added to the course proposal form
  • locations of past course offerings are now displayed in the proposal print view

December 6 update: downloading drop box submissions

Oh boy, you're probably thinking, another exciting update post. But wait! This one includes something that I think will make a lot of instructors very happy. We've introduced a feature that will make downloading drop box submissions more efficient and allow you to more easily identify who submitted what. Click Read More for information about the new tool.

We also made some changes to CSCS. When submitting a proposal, CSCS records who submitted it AND who the faculty member the submission was made on behalf of. The submitter information is now shown on the first page when creating a proposal, and will be filled in automatically with data from LDAP. People reviewing a proposal are now asked to provide their title, department, and campus. This information will also be filled in automatically with data from LDAP.

ANGEL Group Creation unavailable

There is currently an issue that is preventing new groups from being created with the Create a Group link in the My Groups nugget. The ANGEL team is currently working to resolve this issue. If you need to create a group immediately, please contact ANGEL Support with the following information: group name, category (choose from Administrative, Advising, Club, Committee/Task Force, Course Development Space, Research, Study Group, or Training/Professional Development), and whether or not the group should be included in the search results.

We apologize for any inconvenience this issue causes and appreciate your patience.
