ANGELshorts (Vol. 2, #1): Five Things Faculty Should Know about the Manage Tab

ANGELshorts Vol. 2, Issue #1 Five Things Faculty Should Know about the Manage Tab is now available.

From the article:
"In ANGEL 7.1, the Manage tab replaces the Tools tab found in earlier versions. The Manage tab houses the Management Console, which is comprised of common course management tools to help you manage students, grades, and attendance. Additionally, this is where you will find the course settings tools that enable you to alter a variety of environment settings and data management tools that allow you to back up and restore, import and export, and manage files."

Movie: Adding a Syllabus to a Course

There a three ways to add a syllabus to a course: You can create a syllabus from within the course using the Syllabus template; you can link to a syllabus that already exists on the web, e.g. on your personal web space; or, you can upload an existing syllabus file. This is the most popular way of adding a syllabus to a course. Placing a syllabus in your ANGEL course and making the course available meets the Faculty Senate requirements of providing a syllabus to students. Alex, Yu-Chang and myself put together a short vignette describing each process. Click on the image below to watch the brief demonstration.

How We Are Addressing What We Learned About The ANGEL Interruptions

Please take a moment to read the following note from Information Technology Services regarding lessons learned from the interruptions in ANGEL availability at the end of the semeste . -Jeff

Penn State's Course Management System (ANGEL) experienced unprecedented and unanticipated performance problems during the fall semester finals week. Since that time ITS has dedicated extensive resources investigating the disruption to this critical system.

How are we addressing what we are learning about the ANGEL interruptions during finals week?

Notice to Spring 2008 ANGEL Instructors Concerning Importing, Exporting, and Copying Course Content

Please take a moment to read the following note from Information Technology Services regarding moving course content at the beginning of the semester. -Jeff

With the spring 2008 semester fast approaching, instructors are returning to town and preparing their courses, which includes creating and placing content into ANGEL, the Penn State Course Management System.

ANGEL continues to grow in popularity with over 250,000 student course section enrollments (63% of the total course sections offered) this past semester. This increase in use, while most certainly welcomed, presents challenges.

Movie: How to Publish Final Grades

A really nice feature of the ANGEL Course Gradebook is the ability to use it in conjunction with eLion. Instructors can, while in eLion, select the option to pull in the student's grades from their ANGEL Course. But to do this you must first prepare the gradebook to "speak" with eLion through a process called Publish Final Grades. I've put together a short vignette explaining this process. Click on the image below to watch the brief (about 3 minutes) demonstration.

Media Storage Options at Penn State

In a previous post I described how instructors can check their course file size to see if they were approaching the 1 GB ceiling. But did you know there are several media storage options available to instructors that can offset the amount of course storage space used? For example, within ANGEL instructors can apply for a Learning Object Repository or a Master Course. Additionally, services external to ANGEL, such as the Streaming Media Server and iTunes U are available to support audio and video files. Each is briefly described here.

ANGEL Shorts (Vol. 1, #6): Five Things Everyone Should Know about RSS Headlines

ANGEL Shorts, Vol. 1, Issue #5 Five Things Everyone Should Know about RSS Headlines tab is now available.

From the article:
"RSS stands for "really simple syndication" and is a Web format used to gather frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines, or podcasts. Content in an RSS format is read using a feed reader, also called an RSS aggregator, such as the RSS Headlines tool in ANGEL."
