FYI - Firefox 2.0 on Mac & Fast!Page Editor HTML Links in a new window

If you create a link in the FP Editor set to open in a new window in Firefox 2.0 on a Mac, the window actually opens in a new tab, not a new window.

If someone can try this out on a PC - please post what your find here.

Using ZIP Files on a Mac

When you ZIP a folder on a Mac, upload it to ANGEL, and try to select a particular file in the folder as the default page to view when a user clicks on the object, you may not see a full list to choose from. Macs have a built-in archive tool that some may use. When you right-click (or control-click) on a folder, you receive a menu with a "Create archive of..." option. This definitely causes problems as it keeps all the Mac Finder OS-specific hidden files, like .DS_Store.

Another option is Dropstuff, a shareware utility that many Mac users seem to have. Dropstuff definitely causes problems w/ANGEL uploads if you are zipping a folder, as it includes the hidden .DS_Store file. You can fix this in Dropstuff by setting the preferences/options to "Ignore Finder Desktop files."

Finally, there is another shareware program named Zipit (http://www.maczipit.com) that seems to work fine as is.

People should avoid the Mac built-in archive tool, IMO.

Using the Action Editor with a Dropbox to Notify the Instructor of a Submission

Here's a nice way to set up a dropbox (or I suppose a quiz) using the Action Editor so the instructor receives ANGEL mail when a submission is made.

1. Open the Action Editor for the dropbox and create a new action.
2. Choose the Mail (Internal) Action.
3. In the From field, add $USER_NAME$
4. In the To field, add the userID of the instructor.
5. In the Subject Field, add the name of the dropbox. Or,

$ENTRY_TITLE$ submission from $USER_NAME$

or even fancier

$ENTRY_TITLE$ submission from $USER_NAME$($USER_ID$)

would work here as well.
6. In the Message text field, add a message for the body of the ANGEL Mail, like

$USER_NAME$ has submitted to the dropbox.

7. In the Event field, set it to SUBMIT - Process this action when the item is submitted.
8. Save the Action and the Dropbox settings.

I prefer to use the WhoDunIt agent for these sorts of things, but if you have an instructor that loves ANGEL mail, this seems to be a viable alternative.

Setting Extra Credit for the Grade Book

I'd like to see more docs and some examples of how to set extra credit up.

For example, you have the ability to set a assignment as extra credit, or a category as extra credit. If you set a category as extra credit then try to add an assignment into it that also is specified as extra credit, the gb will not accept it. You'll get an error message and will have to deselect the extra credit checkbox in the assignment if you want to keep it within that category.

This is probably programming logical, but not user logical, so we need some examples of use.

Also, when grading by points, what value do you assign to the extra credit assignment? You can't leave it at zero. I tried 20, but when I gave a person 5 points extra credit, it showed as 25%. So I reset the possible value to 100, then 5 shows as 5. I hope that's right!

We need examples of various scenarios of extra credit use, so people can quickly find a matching example and learn from it.
