ANGEL has a variety of ways to assess student work including the ability to grade all lesson content items and link them to the Gradebook. The most common assessment items include quizzes, drop boxes, and discussion forums. Using ANGEL the instructor can keep all the grades in one place and submit the final grades to eLion at the end of the semester. Students, and instructors, can monitor progress throughout the semester and seek guidance where needed.
ANGEL quizzes have several powerful uses. They can be given at the beginning of a lesson to assess the student's prior knowledge of the topic thus enabling instructors to adopt their lesson plan accordingly. This can be followed by a lesson post test to both measure learning and determine next steps. They can be used by students as a learning tool through the practice and feedback mechanisms. Low-stakes quizzing can increase students' awareness of their progress and provide instructors with the opportunity to monitor the progress of their students' learning. Many instructors use a variety of media to teach their students. Using multiple forms of media allows the instructor to engage the students on both the visual and auditory planes. This enables deeper learning to occur as opposed to using words or pictures alone.
A Drop Box provides an area for students to submit assignments electronically. These assignments can then be reviewed and graded. Students upload the assignment to the drop box, and instructors are able to view which student uploaded each submission as well as the times when items were submitted.
Discussion Forums, described in the fostering Communication and Discussion section, can also be graded. Grading of a discussion forum can be accomplished in two locations: Within the individual discussion forum on the Lessons tab, by selecting Utilities or within the gradebook, accessed on the Manage tab.
All assignments can be kept in the Course Gradebook. The gradebook allows course editors to track and display grades for ANGEL lesson content items (quizzes, drop boxes, etc.) and for assignments handed in outside of the ANGEL environment (presentations, speeches, etc.). Assignments are organized by categories that can be weighted to calculate an overall grade for each student. The course gradebook is accessed by selecting the Gradebook link on the course Manage tab. The first time you enter the gradebook, the Gradebook Setup Wizard appears. Instructors have the option of going through the wizard (recommended) or skipping the wizard and manually configuring the gradebook.
The main Gradebook menu consists of four areas of functionality: a Views section that allows you to view grades, an Enter/Edit Grades section that allows you to enter grades and comments by assignment or by student, a Gradebook Setup section that allows you to configure gradebook preferences and import/export grades, and a Gradebook Management section that allows you to manually create and edit gradebook categories, assignments, macros, and a grading scale. Students can monitor their progress throughout the semester by viewing the gradebook from the Report tab and instructors have the option of posting final grades to eLion.
