With the Course Gradebook there is no longer the manually scored assignment (MSA) option under the Lessons tab, like there was with the Penn State Gradebook. Instead this option has been incorporated right into the gradebook proper. To create an MSA:
1. go into the gradebook
2. select the assignments link
3. select the add new option
4. complete the fields (assignment name, point values, etc.)
5. select save
This will serve the same function. You can add/edit scores and students can see their grades for assignments outside of ANGEL.
Gradebook assignments are grouped by category. To reorder the assignments within a category go into the gradebook and:
Note: To rearrange categories, follow steps 1 through 3 above and and use the "Move Up" or "Move Down" option as appropriate.
Note: This issue occurs when you use the Copy Gradebook Settings (see attachment "gbpreferences1") tool found under Preferences. (see attachment: "gbpreferences").
If you choose to copy categories from one gradebook to another, and one or more of the categories use a "drop lowest" or "use highest" method for grading, the "drop lowest" setting will copy but not the actual number of items to be dropped. So, by default, the category in the new course is listed as "drop lowest 0".
Note: This issue will be resolved in v7. In the meantime the temporary fix is to, after copying over the gradebook settings, instructors should go into the gradebook Categories, select the option to edit the category and adjust the Calculation Type number field.
Note: This is an excellent document developed by Ergin that includes examples of some of the most asked formula questions. It is also still in development. Please feel free to add your examples to this document by posting a comment. Thanks, J
We have prepared a document summarizing how to use the formula tokens in the formula editor of the gradebook with a few examples. This is currently a draft and you are welcome to contribute. Let us know if you have any questions/comments or any other examples you would like us to include.
Instructors can lock grades when grading assignments within the gradebook. When entering grades by assignment or user the "Locked" field will automatically activate when a point total or percentage is entered. When using the "Batch Update" option the "Locked" field will not automatically populate. The instructor must select the Lock check box in the "Batch Update" area to have it take effect.
Note: Grades locked from within the gradebook will not be changed if the instructor grades the item from within the Lessons tab. For example, the instructor grades a dropbox assignment within the gradebook and locks the grade. If the instructor, at a later time, grades the same drop box under the Lessons tab the grade in the gradebook will not change.
The Locked option when used with Gradebook assignments that are associated with ANGEL content items (quiz, drop box, discussion forum, etc.) allows you to "lock" and manually overwrite a student grade to ensure it will not be overwritten by updates to the associated ANGEL content item.
For example, an instructor creates a quiz in ANGEL that students can take multiple times. She wants the first one to count as a grade and also wants the students to be able to practice the for the mid-term by taking the quiz multiple times. To do this she sets the "Max Attempts" in the Quiz settings to unlimited and sets the "Calculation Type" in the gradebook assignment editor to first submission. Students can then take the quiz multiple times but only their score for the first time they submitted the quiz will be recorded in the gradebook.
The Gradebook affords instructors the ability to associate a gradebook assignment with a content item under the Lessons tab. This can be done in three places:
A benefit of associating items is that grades can be entered in the Lessons tab and the gradebook records them. This is so for grades that the instructor manually enters under the Lessons tab such as a drop box or discussion forum, as well as items that can be automatically graded, such as a quiz.
