Browser Issues Encountered When Grading Discussion Forums

Firefox, Mozilla, and Netscape users may find that grades entered for discussion forums in the "Grade Forum" tool are not saved or shown in either the Discussion forum utilities or the gradebook. This issue will be resolved in a future update to ANGEL. As a workaround, if using Firefox, Mozilla, or Netscape, please enter your grades directly in the gradebook (the grades will stick there where they matter most). Another option is to use Internet Explorer until the issue is resolved.

Copying gradebook settings

There are two ways of copying your gradebook settings from a previous course into a new course:

Copy Gradebook Settings tool allows you to copy your gradebook settings, gradebook macros, categories and assignments. However, it won't copy the links between your gradebook assignments and your content items in the lessons tab, like drop boxes. You have to create those links again by selecting the corresponding associated content item in the assignment settings in the gradebook. Also regarding category settings, a glitch still exists, as described here.

Gradebook Copy Settings Tool

This issue occurs if you use the "Copy Gradebook Settings" tool found under "Preferences."

If you choose to copy categories, and one or more of the categories use a "drop lowest" or "use highest" method for grading, the "drop lowest" setting will copy BUT NOT the actual number of items dropped. So the category in the new course is listed as "drop lowest 0".

Please double check your category settings and, if necessary, go in and edit the category in order to re-enter the number of droped items.

We reported this issue to ANGEL Learning and will let you know when it has been resolved.

The ANGEL Course Gradebook Is Available In All Courses

As of today, 1/3/2007, the Course Gradebook replaces the Online Grade Report as the grade repository available in all courses and groups within ANGEL. The Course Gradebook offers instructors many features that were not available in the Online Grade Report including the ability to:

-Grade all kinds of assignments (both within and external to ANGEL) in one place
-Display the grades to students in a secure environment (including the student's overall average for the course)
    -Pull grades from eLion

The Course Gradebook as implemented by ANGEL Learning was based on the Gradebook developed by Penn State and piloted over the last year. Click here to access a copy of the Course Gradebook manual in ANGEL Help.

Weighting assignments equally

By default, ANGEL calculates category average by dividing the sum of collected points for all assignments in the category by the sum of total possible points. So it counts higher point assignments more.

For example, suppose that in a homework category we have two assignments:
Hw1: 80 pts worth
Hw2: 100 pts worth

A student gets 80 for Hw1, 50 for Hw2. Then the category average for this student is calculated by ANGEL as: (80+50)/(80+100) yielding 72.22% by default.

However, if you'd like to weight all assignments equally, then the category average would slightly be different. In the same example, the student has 80 out of 80 which is 100% for Hw1; 50 out of 100 which is 50% for Hw2. Then the average of these is 75% which would be the category average if both were weighted equally.

In order to weight all assignments in a category equally, you need to enter a formula for that category. To do so:

- in the gradebook, click on "Categories"
- select the checkbox next to the category and click on "Edit Selected"
