BuzzLion for Week of June 1

Summer is here, and if you don’t believe it, step outside of the air conditioning (weren’t we freezing about two weeks ago? Gotta love Central PA weather). Thank God for climate control, which enables the production of the BuzzLion with relatively little perspiration.

Brett Bixler, ETS lead instructional designer, asks for input on a very interesting question: Can the game World of Warcraft build a better workforce? He links to an article that finds those who are successful at leading in the game may be able to apply those skills in the workplace.

Keeping with the gaming theme, Brett posts a report by a Penn Stater who attended the Games for Change Festival. Very, very interesting stuff to read about gaming’s role in society as an agent of change and in education.

Yvonne Clark, ETS instructional designer, posted a comparison chart that was the result of a committee that looked into options for delivering video-based instruction to remote learners. A very nicely done resource that is quite useful for those looking into video instruction.

That Brett Bixler guy has been busy on the blogs. Here, he posts a link to a recording of the all-ID meeting on June 6, where they discussed approaching course content developed and delivered outside ANGEL.

Chris Stubbs, ETS programmer, makes an interesting blog post on comments, futures markets, and participatory culture. Chris talks about the concerns and issues that are sometimes raised when participating in Web 2.0 tools such as blogs.

Before we go, a quick announcement; as you can see, there is a fair amount of discussion going on about gaming and education. If you are interested, there is an informal event known as the virtual worlds/gaming lunch. The next one will be held:

THURSDAY, 6/26
11:30 - 1:00
ROOM 430 Burrowes Building

If you’d like a beta invite to PMOG, send Bart Pursel an email at bpursel@ist.psu.edu These are informal events, please feel free to stop by anytime over lunch.

That’s all for the BuzzLion this week. Thanks for reading.
