A look at what has ETS staff abuzz and gets people talking for the week of August 5…..

Cole Camplese talks Intranets, discusses how they can help an organization, and also wants to know how readers are using them in an interesting look at these internal communication tools.

“I have been working with one of my colleague here at ETS to rethink our Intranet space … let me say that I feel our local Intranet (it supports about 100 people within Teaching and Learning with Technology) is successful at helping us all share information in a somewhat organized way.”

Wendy Mahan asks an interesting question - can the iPhone replace a laptop? Here is her answer.

“So going back to my original question, can the iPhone replace a laptop? At this point, no, but I think in the near future, it probably could.” (Okay, okay, so we gave away the answer - but please check out WHY she came to this conclusion, as it may not be why you think.)

Mary Janzen has some great news for faculty wanting to learn more about ANGEL.

“Faculty who use or plan to use Penn State’s Course Management System, ANGEL (http://cms.psu.edu/), are encouraged to take advantage of several upcoming opportunities to learn more about ANGEL.”

Cole Camplese takes a look at the new Apple products and just what they can do.

“It had always seemed to me that iMovie was sort of limited in that it was a production only environment………What I was always after was a place to store and manage all my digital content (raw video clips, photos, music, compiled videos, PDF, etc) that could be manipulated and interacted with either internal to that application or via another one in a media viewer style. The rebirth of iMovie as both a production environment and a repository is very smart.”

At ETS, we always want opinions from faculty, staff, and students concerning our projects so we can work on ways to enhance them. This is especially true of new projects. Elizabeth Pyatt tells us about a consultation with Penn State faculty member Joel Galbraith regarding the Blogs at Penn State pilot.

“One of his main concerns was how students can share and comment on videos. Right now he is using a combination of ANGEL and Viddler. He likes using the ANGEL dropbox as a way of tracking student progress/grades, but needs a place for student discussion.”

Elizabeth Pyatt offers some examples of great Penn State blogs produced during the Blogs at Penn State pilot.

“I’ve been asked if there are any good example blogs? Now that the Blogs at Penn State have been in production a few months, I can say there are some good samples out there.”

Gary Chinn issues a Call for Video/Podcasting Assignment Examples as part of the Digital Commons project.

“We are in the process of collecting examples of how the Digital Commons facilities might be used in classes across disciplines.”
