BuzzLion for the week of March 9

Spring break is nearly over today. To those of you who had a spring break, soon time to get back to work. Buzzlion was busy documenting what was going on here in ETS, so here is the BuzzLion for the week of March 9….

The work for the March 29 Penn State Symposium for Teaching and Learning with Technology is in the home stretch here at ETS. Last week’s BuzzLion talked about the Web 2.0 hype being generated about the Symposium. Cole Camplese, ETS director, posted this week on his blog about a very interesting way that people can find others with similar interests at the Symposium - “tag stickers”. It really is a way you can actually “tag” people - don’t worry, this is 100 percent humane and does not involve a campfire and a branding iron. Take a look, it really is an interesting idea.

Since we are technophiles around here at ETS (hey, it’s part of the job description), we often stumble upon neat tools on the Internet and like to share them. Elizabeth Pyatt, instructional designer with ETS, recently found “Pixel Stick”, which as the Web site describes:

“PixelStick is a tool for measuring distances and angles on the screen. Excellent for designers or anyone who wants to measure a distance on their screen in any window or application.”

Elizabeth has another interesting blog post on her area of expertise, instructional design,
and how it relates to course content matter. She discusses how different courses and instructors use different technology tools, and whether different tools are relevant to the subject matter.

Brett Bixler, lead instructional designer with ETS, is our resident Second Life guru and often offers his expert thoughts on the virtual world and its applications in education via the Educational Gaming Commons.. He has written three very interesting blog posts this week on Second Life and education that are definitely worth a look:

- Second Life and Music Education

- Artificial Intelligence and Second Life

- Penn State Adult Education and Second Life

That’s all for this week on the BuzzLion - we will keep it short so you can get back in the swing of things after your spring break. If you have anything going on in your world that you would like BuzzLion to mention, such as an interesting way you are using technology in classes, a question about an ETS program, or an event you have attended, send a note to jco11@psu.edu, and we will run it in the next edition.

Thanks for reading
