BuzzLion for Week of April 27

The BuzzLion was sick as a dog last week (okay, sort of a contradiction for a LION to be sick as a DOG). But the BuzzLion is back and healthy this week. ETS? Well, it never stopped cranking out the innovation.

Cole Camplese, ETS director, leads off this week with a blog post on remote collaboration. He notes high gas prices as one reason this is a smart option for meetings with people at different locations.

Dave Stong, ETS graphics design master, is lamenting the “death” of the Web design tool. As usual, Dave takes a piece of news about graphics, design, art, and/or software and puts an interesting spin on the subject. In this case, he offers a bit on why he liked the tool and how he used it.

Elizabeth Pyatt, ETS instructional designer, discusses the challenges inherent when different units at Penn State work together. She offers ideas on how to make collaborations such as this more efficient.

Elizabeth also has a blog post this week on an interesting mashup for linguistics.

Brad Kozlek, ETS senior programmer, mentioned on his blog this week about ETS’s “Brainstorming Breakfasts”, an informal weekly gathering where staff discuss ideas. He posted a link to the gathering’s wiki, which shows some of the educational technology ideas that are being discussed.

If you are a virtual world enthusiast (especially when it comes to uses of them in education), Brett Bixler, ETS lead instructional designer, has an event you probably will be interested in attending. The Second Life Education Community Conference 2008 will be held Sept. 5-7 in Tampa, FL. See Brett’s post on the Educational Gaming Commons blog for more information.

Jeff Swain, ETS instructional designer, and Mary Janzen, ETS senior writer/editor, produce something called ANGELShorts, tips on carrying out a specific task in ANGEL. They have a new one this week called Five Things Should Know About Publishing Final Grades. Sort of a relevant topic for this of year, don’t you think.

Well, that’s it for this week’s BuzzLion. Thanks for reading!
