2008 Symposium Recap
I wanted to take the opportunity to provide a little summary of the great things that went on with the TLT Symposium on March 29, 2008. If you attended, let me personally thank you and I hope you had an exciting time this year as we shared the truly amazing things happening around Penn State. That so many members of our community decided to spend a Saturday sharing in the outstanding sessions and conversations points to the fact that we are all making great progress in the use of technology to support teaching and learning.
Please share thoughts about the Symposium as a comment! We want to hear your voice!
This year’s event was an overwhelming success on many fronts, but I wanted to share a few quick numbers that excited us:
- 325 people participated in a communal discussion about teaching and learning with technology
- Over 500 pictures taken and posted to Flickr
- Amazing participation in the build your own tag at the Tag Team table
- 860 “tweets” made during the Symposium and posted to Twitter and catalogued via the use of our hashtag
- 2 videos of the keynote and faculty lunch panel
- 7 video interviews with presenters and guests
- 25 audio recordings of concurrent sessions
- 15 “on-the-street” interviews with attendees
- 21 posters and a lively crowd at the poster session
- 60 people taking part in the hands-on demonstration room
- Ongoing posts and comments about the sessions on the Symposium Web site
- Countless conversations happening in the hallways
The Symposium Web site will serve as a hub for many of our ongoing activities. I encourage you to revisit the posts at the site and if you’d like to contribute, just log on the site with your Penn State credentials and share your thoughts. We made and are in the process of posting recordings of this year’s sessions so we could share them with people who were not able to attend every presentation. If you want to watch Lawrence Lessig’s keynote presentation again please know that video is also available.
As a final note, we are already planning next year’s Symposium. As you are working to use technology to enhance your teaching and research, please consider presenting at next year’s Symposium. We will make an open call for proposals and registration during the fall 2009 semester through the Symposium Web site. Also, if you have ideas to contribute just create a simple post at the Symposium site.
2008 TLT Symposium Kicking Off!
For most of the ETS staff today is the real start of the 2008 TLT Symposium. A full year of planning has gone into creating what we hope will be an amazing experience for the faculty, staff, and students of Penn State. We’ll be posting all sorts of stuff over at the Symposium website so keep an eye on that. We have bloggers, podcasters, people shooting video, Twittering, and Flickr photos coming in from all sorts of places. It should prove to be an exciting day.
Today we spend time with our keynote speaker, Professor Lawrence Lessig, letting him meet the Symposium sponsors throughout the day. I imagine the session with the Dickinson School of Law will be quite interesting. I am also looking forward to our dinner tonight as the table will have quite the range of perspectives around it. All in all, a full weekend of Symposium activity. S, we hope to see you bright and early tomorrow at the Penn Stater!

Symposium Tag Images
While we are offically using the tag tltsymposium2008 for all things social software (Flickr, posts, del.icio.us, etc), we have also created the Moo stickers with a whole bunch of tags. You can check them out over at the ETS Design Library where our webmaster, Audrey Romano, describes how she came up with them. It seems they’ve become a little more popular than we expected and people are asking for the digital versions to use for whatever reasons. Who are we to deny that? I’ve zipped up a folder holding a bunch of them, so please feel free to download them. Remember, those of you attending the TLT Symposium on March 29th will be able to stick the tags on your badge, laptop, forehead, or any other place you want.

Follow the Symposium on Twitter
As we start the countdown to the TLT Symposium, I thought I’d point out that Allan and the Symposium team will be upping the Twitter chatter once again. The TLT Symposium has had its own Twitter channel for quite some time now … we used it last year and even had a big screen display in the break area to show off the tweets. Get started early this year and visit the Symposium’s Twitter page and follow along. I’m sure it will follow you back!
Symposium for Teaching and Learning with Technology
The annual Penn State Symposium for Teaching and Learning with Technology brings together faculty and teaching support staff to share innovative ideas and best practices for using technology to enhance courses. The next symposium is scheduled for March 29, 2008. As a complement to the event, the Web site at http://symposium.tlt.psu.edu/ provides a calendar of events, podcasts, and a blog to which faculty are invited to contribute throughout the year. An RSS feed of new blog posts is available.
