Hi everyone,
At the York Campus, we are awaiting the arrival of the Digital Commons - but in the meantime, we've needed to come up with a new way to videotape student presentations in speech classes - that would allow students and faculty to review their work and also get rid of post-production blues...
We did not have a DVD burner in our classroom set-ups yet, which would have allowed us to just record directly with that tri-colored wire connection (how is that for technical jargon!) to a DVD - and no budget to get them yet.... so we improvised and came up with this set-up...
We connected a Sony camera with firewire to the computer - set on a tri-pod - Selected that camera in a Breeze meeting room - which had the camera pod stretched to a reasonable size - with student ppt beside it.
We got a $14.00 Logitech USB mic, taped it to a mic stand, placed it on the podium...
We used the light from the overhead projector to give extra flood-lighting - ha!! Worked really good, although we blew a couple fuses when it was all plugged into the same outlet...
We did audio set-up wizard - and then recorded the sessions in Breeze - Students then each had their unique URL (and the professor) to look at later for feedback...
So far it is working well...and no post-production for faculty member which was important for this application...
sample recording
Sounds great - do you have a sample recording using the setup (not necessarily a student presentation) we could look at? Thanks!
Permission from 3 groups
Hi all,
We got permission from 4 student groups to let you all view COM 100 speeches using Breeze... The camera operator was awful (me)!! So don't count that against them :)
1 group used ppt:

3 did not:

Feedback from prof - He liked the ease of use - no post-production - simple URL to review and to send to students - needs authentication to view - tech support (me & our head of IT) did the recording and set-up
Students were facing the screen - we projected Breeze so they could see themselves and see their ppt and have instant feedback
We got mixed feedback from students - about facing audience or facing screen would be better -
**some were less nervous because they were facing away from the audience (it was a plug limitation issue - no cords long enough for firewire and mic to get the camera/mic set-up to back of room so they could face the audience - this can be adjusted ultimately...
** some were more nervous because they were looking at themselves on screen - and wanted audience reaction
** I think overall they would have rather been looking at the audience than at themselves on screen
** some thought it was fun
** some thought the camera person was awful - critics everywhere - ha!!
** for the ppt group - they thought it was a bit awkward to have to progress the ppt for their group members and then talk themselves - but they would do that in a F2F presentation anyway...
** happy to use technology and feel cutting edge...
** wanted a better way to get their posters on camera - we could have taken a picture and uploaded the image into Breeze - OK - next time... This time we put them on an easel and I tried to zoom in - again - camera operator issue :(
asking today
Hi Tricia,
We are doing a session today, and I'll ask if any students would mind sharing....
