CourseCast - free lecture capture system

Campus Technology had an article about CourseCast, a free lecture capture system that grew out of a project at Carnegie Mellon - see http://www.campustechnology.com/articles/60310
Has anyone looked into this? (Also see Panopto and Socrates Project at http://www.panopto.com/)
I'm just wondering because we have more and more faculty interested in this kind of tool, and I've been surprised by the kind of interest students have been showing in accessing captured lectures.

The CLC is looking into

The CLC is looking into something called Podcast Producer, which is an automated capture/publishing solution from Apple. Here is some info on it:

It's not ready for prime time yet. Hopefully they will be able to do a pilot in the fall.

Risk Management

Just an additional bit of info...

Our Director of IT sent the marketing requirements (that we allow them to use our name in publications about use) to Risk Management - they made some modifications to the document and he sent it on to Panopto to see if it is OK - So if you go for this, don't re-invent the wheel here - they have already seen it and have a doc....

Panopto has offered to send an engineer to help us get set up - we still have server issues - but I think it is being worked out... I'll keep you posted as I know more...

CourseCast

Hi Carol,

At York, (thanks to your initial info about it!!) I showed it to our IT Director and he contacted them (through the online form on their website)... They got in touch within the week and he and I got to see it demonstrated and were able to ask questions to their rep... It looks really good! They are looking for higher ed partners to use it so they can get feedback and perfect it - their goal is to sell it to business, and keep it as free to higher ed...

From my bad memory... here is what I remember - there are 2 stations - the podium at the front of the room and then a second set-up in the back with the software that captures audio/video - it can be edited - you can purchase server space from them or use your own... the recordings can be viewed and notes added to it - so it remains interactive in a sense... you can capture the speaker, ppt, and your screen - and I think you can have a second capture for board work...

Where we are now... their only request from Panopto is that they be able to use our name in their marketing materials saying that we use the product and any comments about it - so our IT director (Loren Brewster) is looking into that with PSU... But then I think if that is Ok'd we are going to go ahead with it...

Re: CourseCast

Thanks Suzanne! Do you recall if there were any hardware/software costs associated with it (besides the server space issue)?

no cost for software

Hi Carol,
No cost as far as we could see for software - you need your own camera and mic and computers to run it... they also have tech support available for purchase if you want that... and in the next version , they are looking to have it work with webcams rather than larger video cams...
