Penn State Captioning Tool Posted

In recent years, Pat Besong of ITS had developed and offered a captioning tool for the Mac called "Parity." This tool has now been released as MovCaptioner from http://www.synchrimedia.com.

It is still free for Penn State users. You can contact Pat Besong (pzb@psu.edu) for information on how to obtain a license.

The cost for users outside of Penn State is approximately $40, but it does support a wide range of caption types including Quicktime, Flash, YouTube, video poscast and more.

Captions in YouTube

YouTube does support caption files (specifically the SubViewer/.sub and SubRip/.srt). You can find information about searching for captioned videos and reading captions at

http://www.youtube.com/t/captions_about

More information about the specific caption format is at

http://help.youtube.com/support/youtube/bin/answer.py?answer=100077

P.S. Pat just confirmed that Parity can create the correct caption format for YouTube.

Using YouTube for Instruction

This is more of an intro to YouTube - just the basics of obtaining an account, etc. Still, a nice toll to add to your toolkit to send to faculty if they are interested:

Ironic that it's not on YouTube, don't you think?

Multimedia Community group meetings

Just wanted to let everyone know that we will be holding Multimedia Community group meetings on a monthly basis. Topics will include Flash, video, audio, 3D, podcasting, and basically anything related to multimedia. Our first meeting will be held on Friday, September 26th from 10-11 AM in 202K Rider Bldg. Our first topic will be on transitioning to Actionscript 3.0 for Flash users. We welcome any multimedia developers or others that may be interested in the topics.

File conversion software

Many times, we look for videos that would be good illustrations of a lesson, a concept, or just examples with other possibilities that we can share with students, faculty, staff, and colleagues. There are sites that have material available that can be used, but it isn’t always in the appropriate format compatible with PowerPoint, Softchalk, or ANGEL.

Summer Multimedia Workshops from Digital Commons

University Park

The Digital Commons just posted its Summer workshop schedule at: http://digitalcommons.psu.edu/workshops
Note: Workhops are listed with August workshops at top and July workshops at the bottom.

These are small-group, hands-on workshops, and are highly focused so you can learn the basics of a multimedia software package (such as iMovie, Garageband, or Final Cut Pro) in the duration of 1 hour.

Please register for workshops through ITS Training at http://its.psu.edu/training.
