Introduction

The Digital Commons Tailgate is a community-built unconference aimed at exploring multiple aspects of digital media for teaching and learning, including pedagogy, digital literacy, and technology.

The purpose of this conference will be to collectively develop a series of best practices which will inform how we use digital media in the classroom, taking into account how today's students learn, and the tools and technologies they are immersed in.

This event is free for all Penn State faculty and staff


Intended Audience

Faculty, Instructional Designers, Instructional Technologists, Librarians, and anyone else interested in exploring new solutions to integration of digital media into teaching and learning.

Discussion NOTES

Discussion Groups

Discussion sessions provide an opportunity for a small group to focus on a single topic for a set period of time. The objective will be to identify key issues and propose potential solutions and best practices. The group will document their best ideas, which will be revisited in the Synthesis Session.

We have 2 45-minute discussion sessions scheduled on Saturday, which we will decide on collectively.

    • Traditional research skills and how they apply to video and podcasting projects
    • Using the University Libraries' media collections
  2. Fair Use and What you CAN do.
    • Making copyright a positive discussion
  3. Tools for Web-based Media Authoring
    • Kaltura, photoshop.com, aviary.com, and other
    • How these tools can impact the use of digital media in instruction

Lightning Talks are a series of 10 minute sessions to introduce topic, demo a new technology, or show off work that you or your students have done.

Back Channel/Social Networking

A lot of the conversation at an unconference happens in the back channel a.k.a. the hallway conversations. There are several tools to facilitate the conference back channel, some of which are listed below. And remember, it's not just not rude to participate in the back channel during sessions, it's encouraged!

Directions

From Harrisburg and North: Follow Interstate 81 South to Scotland, Exit 20. Turn left onto Route 997 South. At the intersection of Routes 997 and 30 (traffic light), make a right and then an immediate left (traffic light) back onto Route 997 South. Proceed five miles to Mont Alto. At the Mont Alto square, turn left onto Route 233 North (Park Street). The campus is approximately one mile on the left.

From York and East: Take Route 30 West through Gettysburg approximately 17 miles to Route 997 South. Turn left at second light, proceed five miles to Mont Alto. At the Mont Alto square, turn left onto Route 233 North. The campus is approximately one mile on the left.

From Pittsburgh and West: Use Pennsylvania Turnpike Exit 201 (Blue Mountain). Take Route 997 South through Roxbury and Scotland. At the intersection of Routes 997 and 30 (traffic light), make a right and then an immediate left (traffic light) back onto Route 997 South. Proceed five miles to Mont Alto. At the Mont Alto square, turn left onto Route 233 North (Park Street). The campus is approximately one mile on the left.

From Philadelphia and East: Take the Pennsylvania Turnpike to Exit 226 (Carlisle). Follow signs to I-81 South (Chambersburg). Follow I-81 South to Scotland, Exit 20. Turn left onto Route 997 South. At the intersection of Routes 997 and 30 (traffic light), make a right and then an immediate left (traffic light) back onto Route 997 South. Proceed five miles to Mont Alto. At the Mont Alto square, turn left onto Route 233 North (Park Street). The campus is approximately one mile on the left.
