Overview

Google has continued to evolve into a powerful web tool developer. With a single account, users have access to secure and public webpage tools, online/offline documents (comparable to Word, Excel, and PPT), RSS reader, blog, calendar, email, groups, and instant messaging are some of the tools available for free.

Three factors have lead to the adoption of Google Apps in higher education.

1) Price: Free is always good (well if the quality of product is sufficient)

2) Accessibility: Files are store online and can be accessed from devices with internet access. Google Apps have increasingly been updated to allow for online and offline storage. Google Calendar can sync with many desktop calendar program, on multiple machines. Use Outlook at work and iCal at home? No problem - both are up to date online.

3) Collaboration: Google apps really promote the ability for collaboration/discussion between users.

These three factors have lead several large universities to implement Google Apps on campus.
