Description
The Live Question Tool is an online service that lets a group of people submit questions, reply to questions, and vote on questions that they would like to see addressed. We heard about the tool when Cole Camplese and Chris Millet went to the Berkman@10 conference. It was first used at Penn State as part of the Learning Design Summer Camp. During the Summer Camp, we set up the following rooms:
- Using Disruptive Technologies in a Graduate Course
- Intellectual Property and Copyright
- Blogs as Portfolio
- Open Course Resources
Need at Penn State
Currently, we are using Harvard's system to run the Live Question Tool for our events, but it doesn't appear to be in continuous development and there is no support. For the long-term, we need to bring this tool in house so we can ensure that it is available when we need it. We would also like to change the way the tool works based on some feedback that we've gotten from our uses. We have the source code, but can we re-write the tool in Movable Type so anyone can set up their own Live Question Tool instance in their own space?
Key Features
Existing Features in Harvard's Tool
- Submit a question, either with the contributor's name or anonymously
- Vote on a question that has been submitted
- Reply to a question that has been submitted by someone else
- The page refreshed at a specified interval (10 seconds to 1 minute). The quicker refresh rate can lead it confusion if you have a long list of items and they shift around.
- Questions with the most votes rise to the top of the list
Modifications
- The owner of the instance should be able to hide a question that has been addressed
- Provide sorting options (more votes on top, newest on top, etc...)
- Robin Smail pointed out another tool (UserVoice) that is like the LQT, but more focused on submitting feature requests. It's worth examining: http://www.personal.psu.edu/rvs2/blogs/renegade/2008/09/harnessing-that-feedback-goodn.html
