ANGEL Overview Training for Math Department
- Friday 8/22, 10am-noon
- 2 rooms in McAllister

Math 021
Goal for Fall '08
- To move the 12 Math 021 quizzes from paper format into ANGEL.
- To have students take these quizzes at the using the Pollock Testing Center during the designated availability period for each quiz.
Course Specifications
- Four sections with approximately 50 students in each section
- (Potentially) Set up Course Announcements page to inform students of the upcoming mastery quiz deadlines
- Will, Pollock, will also send out an email reminder to the students
- After quiz 12 is taken have a survey become available to the students
Quiz Specifications
- 12 quizzes of 10 questions each.
- Students can take each quiz up to 3x.
- These are mastery quizzes. Once a student achieves the minimum score for mastery they can no longer take the test. We can use the action editor to lock a quiz down once mastery is achieved. (see Action Editor)
- Quiz one must be completed within the drop/add period so that proper guidance can be given. (We will make the quiz end date to be the day before the drop/add period ends.)
- For each quiz would like to build in both question level and summary feedback
- We will set the gradebook up with a quiz category to house all 12 quizzes.
- We will set the gradebook up to use the highest student score for each quiz.
- We will randomize both questions and answers.
Mastery Quiz Timetable with Quiz End Dates
- All quizzes will be available on Sunday, August 24 and will remain available until the closing date specified below.
- Quiz 1 - Sept 3 (this is the "early drop" date so I think it is appropriate to set the end date of Quiz 1 here)
- Quiz 2 - Sept 10
- Quiz 3 - Sept 24 (gives the students an extra week for a breather if they are feeling overrun at this point)
- Quiz 4 - Oct 1
- Quiz 5 - Oct 8
- Quiz 6 - Oct 15
- Quiz 7 - Oct 29 (again, another built-in breather if needed)
- Quiz 8 - Nov 5
- Quiz 9 - Nov 12
- Quiz 10 - Nov 19
- Quiz 11 - Dec 3 (skips over Nov 26 which is in the middle of the Thanksgiving week break)
- Quiz 12 - Dec 10 (this is the Wednesday of the last week of classes)
Assessment Three Surveys and aggregate grade
- Student Profile Survey at beginning of semester
- Student survey midterm of lecture sessions and class experiences
- Student survey of overall satisfaction and learning impact toward end of semester
- Aggregate grade comparisons
Notes
- Master Course requested by Jeff on 7/1.
- Vicki discussed with James need for question feedback containing remediation suggestions. If Jeff will show him how to add this feedback, James will add it to quiz questions in ANGEL. (7/2)

Math 110
Goal for Fall '08
- To move the Math 110 Readiness Quiz from paper format into ANGEL.
- To have students take the Readiness quiz at a time convenient for them using the Pollack Testing Center.
- To motivate students, Readiness Test will count as one of fourteen (14)student quiz scores; any student taking the test receives a 10; students who do not take the test receive a 0. Students may drop 4 quizzes.
Course Specifications
- Approximately 1,500 students for fall '08.
- Two main instructors: James Hager and David Little. TA's working in each course section.
- Julie Reighard working with James to create the quiz for fall.
Quiz Specifications
- No end date. Quiz will be available throughout the semester.(JH: Rethinking this issue, we may want to shut down this capability after two weeks)
- Students can take the quiz 1 time.
- Students should be able to generate a hardcopy of the test after completion to aid review.
Tasks
- James and Julie will create the quiz. Target date: mid-July.
- Jeff will Show James and Julie how to import the quiz into ANGEL (including setting up the document in the proper format).
- Math 110 content will be placed here and the TAs will import the content into their course sections.
- Jeff will create a 1 page summary sheet for the class. Instructions to include steps students need to take in order to complete the Readiness Quiz.
Completed Tasks
- Stan created the readiness test in an ANGEL format and successfully uploaded the test.
- Math 110 master course created
- Math 110 sandbox (group created)
- Will Kerr contacted (7/17) re: reserving Pollock and what quiz settings should be used.

Diploma Discussion Area / Lessons Learned
- Jim installed version on personal Dell laptop
- David will install a Mac version on his laptop
- David will start converting the practice exams identified at the Math 110 website into Diploma/Angel problem formats for student usage.
Math 21 Update
Mastery math approach was piloted and assessed both FA08 and SP09. Survey response frequency reports are available upon request from assessment@psu.edu.
