WinterFest 2009

Digital Media Day

Introduction

This year ITS Training Services is devoting one whole WinterFest day to sessions about using digital media in instruction. This day-long event is divided into two parts, one in the morning from 8:00 to noon and one in the afternoon from 1:00 to 5:00. Interested participants may register for only one or both 4-hour sessions.

Digital Media Day Description

Today’s students are used to using technology – and used to learning with the assistance of technology. They prefer instructional materials that are enhanced with multimedia elements. Research indicates that they are “highly visual learners, preferring to process pictures, sounds, and video rather than text.” They are also used to being “connected” to each other as well as to information 24/7 and expect to be able to access the instructional materials they need anytime and anywhere. In a study just released by UW-Madison, 82% of the students surveyed indicated that they prefer courses that offer online lectures over traditional classes that do not include an online lecture component. The study reports that students use recorded lectures for reviewing materials, improving scores, improving retention, convenience, and making up class.

Penn State offers a variety of resources faculty can use to create sound, engaging instructional materials that appeal to the learning preferences of today’s students. The sessions offered during WinterFest 2009 Digital Media Day will focus on introducing faculty to available resources as well as providing guided, hands-on practice using the resources with production of sample materials that participants can take with them.
