Two Freeware Diagramming Programs

If you need a simple drawing program for illiustrations or concept maps, you may be interested in these two freeware programs.

Dia (Windows Only)
This is a freeware program useful for drawing basic diagrams, and comes with templates for engineering and technical drawings. Files can also be exported to other formats such as PNG and GIF

Download and documentation is at http://live.gnome.org.

Inkscape (Windows and Mac/X11)
This program is more similar to Adobe Illustrator. It has some interesting tools, but it's not as simple as DIA. However if your budget is not big enough for Illustrator (even with the Computer Store discount), then this may be an option. This is also installed in the Student Computer labs.

Note that Mac users must install an up-to-date version of X11, a program which allows Mac users to run many Unix programs including Inkscape.

Download and documentation is at http://www.inkscape.org/download/.

Note that both are open source programs. Although both are stable and full-featured, the documentation and support is not the same experience as it would be for a commercial program.
