Blogs/Portfolio Tip #4: Add a Second Page and Reorder Tabs

So far, the tutorials have covered how to add a page with a tab, but I suspect you will want to more than one page and control tab order. To do that:

Create a Second Page

Follow the instructions on http://ets.tlt.psu.edu/twt/node/167 for creating a "Teaching Philosophy" page or http://kb.its.psu.edu/psu-all/hd/faq-s-about-using-the-professional-webs.... Don't forget to include to @topnav in the Tags field.

Add Tab to All Pages

When you add multiple pages, you may find that the tab for the new page does not appear on older pages. To fix that, you need to Publish all pages.

  1. Login and enter your blog.
  2. Click Manage » Pages in the upper list of links to view a list of all pages in your portfolio.
  3. Check each page within your portfolio, including all pages corresponding to a tab.
  4. Click the Publish link at the top of the list.

You will see a pop-up window showing the progress of the publishing process.

To Suppress a Default Tab

By default, a portfolio template includes "Home", "Blog", "About" and "Contact". To hide these pages/tabs, do the following:

  1. Click Manage » Pages in the upper list of links to view a list of all pages in your portfolio.
  2. Check pages you wish to hide.
  3. In the More Actions menu at the top of the list, select Unpublish Pages then click the Go button. The page will display a pencil icon meaning it is in draft mode and not published.

Change Order of Tabs

The tab order is set (from left to right) for Home, then your portfolio pages, then Blog/About/Contact. New tabs are added immediately to the left of the Home tab and before the last three default tabs.

The order of the new tabs is set by original publication date with the earliest date to the right and the latest date to the left. If the tabs are not in the ordered desired then, adjust the publication dates of each page to an appropriate sequence.

  1. Click Manage » Pages in the upper set of links then click the page you wish to edit.
  2. Change Publish Date to an earlier or later date as needed. The format is year-month-date.
  3. Click Save to publish the page with the revised published date.
  4. Re-Publish all the pages by going to Manage » Pages and clicking the Publish link at the top of the list of pages.

Example of Tab Order

In http://www.personal.psu.edu/ejp10/blogs/portfolio_t/, the leftmost tab after "Home" is Philosopy" and the right most is "Links". Between them are "Classroom", "Communicate", "Innovate", "Media".

To achieve the order I want I pick the current month (e.g. October) and assign dates as follows:

  1. Links (rightmost) = Nov 1 = 2009-11-01 (in Publish Date field)
  2. Media = Nov 2 = 2009-11-02 (in Publish Date field)
  3. ...
  4. Philosophy = Nov 15 = 2009-11-15

It's not hard, but it does require thinking about which pages you have and how you want them ordered.
