About the Learning Design Summer Camp

The goal of the LDSC is to bring together learning designers to keep abreast of current trends in higher ed. teaching and learning.

The second annual Learning Design Summer Camp is currently in the planning stages. In short, the idea of the Learning Design Summer Camp is to create a space for people involved with education technology to get together in an informal setting to show, tell, share, and create.

The 2008 Learning Design Summer Camp was held in August, 2008 with about 110 attendees that included faculty, instructional designers, technologists, media developers, librarians, graduate students, and people from other backgrounds. The group discussed common issues such as copyright issues, open educational resources, personal publishing, and student engagement.

Dates, Times, Location

  • July 21 (Tue) and 22 (Wed), 2009 (With a pre-conference session on Monday, July 20, see details below)
  • 8 AM to 5 PM
  • Kern Auditorium (see video) (THIS IS A CHANGE)

Electricity and Internet Connection

Electricity

Power in this location is limited. We will provide power strips, but may not be able to fulfill everyone's needs throughout the camp. We may need to share. So, please plan accordingly!

  • Bring an extra laptop battery if you have one.
  • Turn on all the energy saving options you can!
  • Bring your own extension cord. Longer is better.
  • Make sure you label all your cords, etc. so you know what's yours.
  • We will have a Plug 'n Power time over lunch. Leave your laptop in Kern plugged in. Someone will be in the room at all times to watch over it.

Internet Connection

The standard PSU wireless connection is available here. You must have the VPN client installed and running - see https://www.work.psu.edu/vpn/ .

Fun Stuff

Backchannel Bingo

During the conference, we'll be running game in the backchannel. Stay tuned for more information.

Stickers

Like last year, we had people create sticker designs and we ordered them from moo.com. If you would like to see the designs, visit the LDSC09 Sticker Page.

Alternative Business Cards

Last year, I (Allan) asked people to bring their business cards to LDSC08, but some people didn't have their own, so they generated some alternative business cards. If you would like to make your own business cards to represent your life in social media, you may want to start with the online business card generator that some of the attendees used last year -- or just make your own.

T-Shirts and Other Swag from the CafePress Shop

IMAGE:LDSC09_Swag.gif Image:Swag_Model_LDSC09.jpg

The Learning Design Summer Camp Cafe Press Shop is now open!

At the 2008 TLT Symposium, Cole Camplese set up a Cafe Press site where people could order their own swag. These were generally based on the moo sticker designs. This year, we welcome attendees to send their own designs to Cafe Press (or a similar service) and have their own custom T-shirts, mugs, coasters, or buttons made -- perhaps your sticker avatar or the LDSC09 image. It's up to you, but show up in style!

As an idea for a t-shirt design, here's a tag cloud from Wordle based on this wiki page: TLT LDSC cloud or this one based on the Buzzword Bingo terms.

People Shaping and Attending the Event

Community Involvement

Everyone attending the event can and should help to shape the event through this wiki. During the event, we expect the attendees to be heavily engaged in discussion and recording the event through blog entries, microblogging (Twitter.com), photo sharing, and anything else they feel like doing to capture the ideas and feeling of the Summer Camp.

Use #LDSC09 to tag your contents to be searchable by everyone.

The attendees last year came from many different campuses, colleges, and work groups. They included instructional designers, education technologists and other IT staff, librarians, faculty, multimedia specialists, and graduate students. If you're in one of these categories or have an interest in the themes and presentations for this year's event, then please consider contributing ideas to this wiki and attending LDSC09.

Possible Themes and Suggestions for the Event

Possible Mascots and Slogans

  • a cupcake as a mascot? :)
  • "Pedagaogy. Because we're Learning Designers, and that's how we roll."

Misc. Suggestions

  • I would like to bring more "valuable" technologies to faculty, and I would like to see TLT symposium or Summer Camp show case technologies addressing the following questions:
  1. did students learn better, or what problems are solved by using this technology,
  2. what changes were made in teaching method,
  3. best practices with this technology,
  4. how sharp is the learning curve for faculty.
  • Maybe this is a framework for the lightning talks. If we produced "7 things" after this event, then that would really be a good outcome. John P is making library tutorials available online--create their own brand where they can use green-screen, digital-audio tools, etc. See this in the informal environment. He'd like to incorporate this.
    • RE: Framework for the lightning talks. I've been to conferences that format these type of sessions, which helps keep them fluid and cohesive. For instance lightning talks that focus on 3 pros/3 cons of a technology. Maybe 3 use cases...some sort of format helps keep these cohesive from one talk to another, and more importantly tends to keep things moving and on time :)
    • In response to this suggestion: what if this idea was framed as assessment using new technologies? Of course, blogs could be a part of it, as well as variety other things...might be a good sharing topic for a group to contribute ideas rather than a single presenter.
  • How could we have an outgoing interview room? 30 seconds of "What did you think of X?" If you weren't able to attend, then you could get info that way. Flip video would work.
  • Poster Session? Use the live question tool to "man" the poster session? Wouldn't need that, just a discussion forum if it's asynchronous. Digital poster site where poster folks upload their stuff and people go there and can download if they want to. Use the question tool to get folks engaged, then poster presenter answers them.
    • If folks were interested in topics, they can do a lunch together.
  • Un-poster--blank poster and see what kind of ideas get put on there.
  • Have folks take a picture at the same time but from their perspective, and use the Microsoft thing to make a mashup. Or a time-lapse camera.
  • Try to weave accessibility issues into main topic discussions.
  • Polling Everywhere--http://www.polleverywhere.com/ Seems like there could be some potential uses for it at LDSC. It's a little different than the Question Tool and can use Twitter to conduct a poll. Since this is a twitter-heavy group, it might work well. We also have the clicker system (PRS Interwrite) available for use in Kern and have 110 clickers if we'd like to use them.
  • At last year's LDSC and TLT this year, a lot of folks added their Twitter/SL/etc. name to their name tag so you could more easily make the connection between the real person on their online identity. In addition to pre-printing the name tags with "I'm interested in..." perhaps a prompt could also be added for: Twitter/SL/etc. name (unless this is what the business cards are for...)

Frameworks for Other Technologies

These are the kinds of technologies that we may be using/discussing during the event. If you need to know about them, have at it!

Social Networking

There are several ways that this event will be connected through supporting social media services. The single common element on all of these sites is the tag "LDSC09". Here are some examples, but feel free to add your own.

  • Flickr is a photo sharing site where you can upload your own photographs, tag and describe them, geotag them, organize them into photo sets, and comment on other people's photos. If you use Flickr and upload photos related to the Learning Design Summer Camp, use the "LDSC09" tag and it will show up when people search Flickr.
