About the Learning Design Summer Camp

The goal of the LDSC is to bring together learning designers to keep abreast of current trends in higher ed. teaching and learning.

The second annual Learning Design Summer Camp is currently in the planning stages. In short, the idea of the Learning Design Summer Camp is to create a space for people involved with education technology to get together in an informal setting to show, tell, share, and create.

The 2008 Learning Design Summer Camp was held in August, 2008 with about 110 attendees that included faculty, instructional designers, technologists, media developers, librarians, graduate students, and people from other backgrounds. The group discussed common issues such as copyright issues, open educational resources, personal publishing, and student engagement.

Dates, Times, Location

The Learning Design Summer Camp will be streamed live at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/psutlt-test

Fun Stuff

Buzzword Bingo

The Educational Gaming Commons wanted to create a gaming experience for participants of the LDSC09, illustrating how games could be leveraged for education in a fun, playful way. At the end of our brainstorming sessions, Chris Stubbs of the EGC jokingly mentioned Buzzword Bingo. For those not familiar, see this IBM commercial

While comical, we decided to pursue the idea. We created a list of words/phrases that we thought would be mentioned by presenters at the LDSC. To take it a step further, we petitioned the ETS community in Rider to add their words/phrases to the mix on the whiteboard in the main hall. We ended with nearly 100 items. We then found an online bingo card generator to quickly produce the actual randomized bingo cards.

The rules are simple: if you want to play, grab a card at the beginning of day one. If you hear a PRESENTER say a word on your card, mark it off. (Optionally, Twitter it as well with an #LDSC09 tag.) If you get 8 in a row (vertical, horizontal or diagonal), shout out "Bingo!" and you win. After playtesting, we believe someone should win near the end of day 1. If someone gets really lucky, we might have a winner before lunch on day 1.

So what's the value?

For instructors teaching in a face-to-face setting, this is a quick and easy method to create bingo cards for important class sessions. This simple game has the potential to:

In addition to having a bit of fun at camp, we hope instructors and designers can walk away with a simple, easy-to-implement game to experiment with.

Cupcakes

Here is a link to the cupcake recipe for those who are interested.

Wine

Happy Camper wine - fits the occasion nicely! http://www.happycamperwines.com/

Stickers

Like last year, we had people create sticker designs and we ordered them from moo.com. If you would like to see the designs, visit the LDSC09 Sticker Page.

Alternative Business Cards

Last year, I (Allan) asked people to bring their business cards to LDSC08, but some people didn't have their own, so they generated some alternative business cards. If you would like to make your own business cards to represent your life in social media, you may want to start with the online business card generator that some of the attendees used last year -- or just make your own.

T-Shirts and Other Swag from the CafePress Shop

LDSC09 Swag.gif Swag Model LDSC09.jpg

The Learning Design Summer Camp Cafe Press Shop is now open!

At the 2008 TLT Symposium, Cole Camplese set up a Cafe Press site where people could order their own swag. These were generally based on the moo sticker designs. This year, we welcome attendees to send their own designs to Cafe Press (or a similar service) and have their own custom T-shirts, mugs, coasters, or buttons made -- perhaps your sticker avatar or the LDSC09 image. It's up to you, but show up in style!

As an idea for a t-shirt design, here's a tag cloud from Wordle based on this wiki page: TLT LDSC cloud or this one based on the Buzzword Bingo terms.

People Shaping and Attending the Event

Community Involvement

Everyone attending the event can and should help to shape the event through this wiki. During the event, we expect the attendees to be heavily engaged in discussion and recording the event through blog entries, microblogging (Twitter.com), photo sharing, and anything else they feel like doing to capture the ideas and feeling of the Summer Camp.

Use #LDSC09 to tag your contents to be searchable by everyone.

The attendees last year came from many different campuses, colleges, and work groups. They included instructional designers, education technologists and other IT staff, librarians, faculty, multimedia specialists, and graduate students. If you're in one of these categories or have an interest in the themes and presentations for this year's event, then please consider contributing ideas to this wiki and attending LDSC09.

Volunteers

If you would like to help organize this event, please add your name to the list below:

Volunteers for Rip Down After the Event

We need a few folk to pull up the cables and pack the power strips up, then carry them to a van. This should only take 10-15 minutes. Get some exercise!

Attendees

If you are planning to attend the Learning Design Summer Camp, please add your name and contact information below. Space is limited to 175 people.

Preparing for the event

Learner Designer - What the Heck Am I?

The ETS Instructional Designers are kicking the tires on what an ID is nowadays. I'd like to extend that to Learning Designers - what are we? How do you tell faculty what you do?

Take a minute, go to the Learning Designer Definitions page, and (in one sentence) define yourself as you would to faculty.

There are several ways that this event will be connected through supporting social media services. The single common element on all of these sites is the tag "LDSC09". Here are some examples, but feel free to add your own.
