Poster Mock Ups
I copied and pasted Dave's email into our notes page. Please post any comments in Flickr under the image.
initial pixel pushing. Thinking in broad strokes...
The shot of Brad is from Dericks flickr photos and would of course need to be a student.
The other two represent a different approach than what we initially discussed. My thoughts are that we'd take photos from community sites- search on "PennState" in flickr, photobucket, what ever. The community of students would supply our images, from their perspective, we'd then arrange several of these smaller shots in random thematic patterns instead of using one large "corporate" style image. We wouldn't need as high a resolution, shots could be more candid and gritty. We'd of course ask permission and give credit. We could also add our own shots.
From Dave- an attempt to render a style with our own images:
From Tara Caimi:
TLT Symposium Marketing Committee Meeting 8/14/2008
Focus for this year’s Symposium is on students
The keynote speaker will be someone who is involved with the student engagement aspect.
- we are in limbo with keynote speaker at this point
Theme
“Student Engagement and the Culture of Teaching and Learning”
- reimagining the students role’ is the next step as students are collaborators and innovators in creating knowledge
- reimagine what faculty expect of students
- different ways that classes are being taught
- different ways students are learning
“reimagine ____________”
- “reimagine” is a different color than the text that comes after
Jeff will present the theme and tag concept of “reimagine” to Cole
Marketing pieces
Similar to last year with the open white background
- images of students working with faculty
- tag line at bottom of piece helps to tell the story of the photo
- reimagine collaboration (example)
- we will need to come up with a number of tags of what is being reimagined – at least 10
- “Lectures”
- “Collaboration”
- “Motivation”
- “Research”
- “Learning”
- “Community”
- “Communication”
- “Assessment”
- “Innovation”
- “Sharing”
- “Distance”
- “Contribution”
- “Roles”
- “Evaluation”
- “Integration”
- “Portfolios”
- “Outcomes”
- “Assignments”
- “Classrooms”
- “Testing”
- “Teaching”
- “Relationships”
- “Penn State”
- “Meetings”
- “Face-to-Face”
- "Discover"
- "Discoverable"
- based on what we come up with for tags, we will come up with a list of faculty and students that we would want to use in these images
- we will need to come up with a number of tags of what is being reimagined – at least 10
- descriptor or caption that describes the photo comes underneath
- “symposium2009” smaller and centered on bottom of piece
- reimagine collaboration (example)
At Cole's request, we've put together a set of six image and several of the above reimagine word combinations for MOO cards:
They were posted for comment and approval on drs18's flickr page. See http://www.flickr.com/photos/33202519@N00/3185782454/ for instance.
In addition, Cole pointed to a conference use of Wordle images and mentioned that it would be worth considering for our Symposium. As a trial, I grabbed text from this wiki and used http://www.wordle.net to generate images. I printed to PDF, then opened the files in Photoshop to create posters.
The idea being that the images could be used on signs that identify specific session rooms with clouds made from abstract text or, as in these examples, clouds could be generated to identify stations.
This is one version of the ad we discussed; I placed it on my blog. The original layout was posted on flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/33202519@N00/3200112810/
The actual spacing of the three elements would have to shift slightly for different layouts. For instance, in this version, the symposium element was lowered to accommodate the deeply vertical arrangement. The small Photoshop file, with the three elements as scalable vector layers, is on my site at http://www.personal.psu.edu/staff/d/r/drs18/reimagine.zip
Photos for marketing pieces would not be staged here in Rider. We would have a photographer actually go out to where the students and faculty are working together to get photos “on-site”
- this can be informal
- these don’t all need to be faculty and students
- they can be of students working with each other
- these would be “action shots” as opposed to the posed photos from last year’s campaign
- photograph of an event
Photos could be in a circle in the center of the page with soft edges
Photos could be like line drawings at the edges of the piece that come together and turn into a photograph in the center of the page
e.g.
Action item for photo concepts
- We will come up with some mock-ups and put them in the wiki by next Core Group meeting on 8/28
- Make a statement that these are for people to see what we are working on, but these are not final and are works in progress
- We are working on this in the open, but we are not ready to send out to a community through something like Twitter until we have an approved concept
In addition to photos and stories, there could be a small snippet of video that goes along with each that serves as a lead-in and complement to the other pieces
Note for Jeff to discuss with Program Committee: Need to start gathering people at the different campuses that we want to showcase
- talk with Matt and Justin about what classes are coming up
Day Events
Feedback from last year mentioned doing some type of post lunch session
- Learning Design Scholarships
- Campus Scholarships
- A way for campuses to demonstrate some of the ways they are doing things
Want to have a way for students to showcase their work
- possibly collect samples throughout the year (put out a call for students) and post them
If we don’t have a lunch speaker, we may have a student panel
Student Videos Interviews Pre-Symposium
Hannah can create videos where we ask students a question such as “What is your Penn State?” or “What do classrooms mean to you?” and then we string together their responses
Symposium Planning Behind the Scenes
We will bring a video camera to the next meeting to start recording our meetings
- the idea would be to post 5 minutes worth of each meeting as a way to share what we are planning with the community
- these can be sent out to a Symposium section on iTunes U
- Derick has taken some photos with his digital camera for the Flickr group

TLT Symposium Marketing Committee Meeting 11/13/2008
Hannah’s needs for video
Chris Brady SHC blogging initiative:
- Chris wants to use this as an advising tool as well as a journal for students’ growth
- advisors will be brought in to see if there is a benefit to helping the students by seeing how they are developing in the curriculum through their journal entries
- Mary and Erin will go along with Hannah and Matt for the interviews
- Mary will conduct the interviews
- Hannah will shoot the video in hi-def so we can take high res stills from the video to use in the posters
- Hannah will also take photos that can be uploaded to Flickr. If we use these photos, we will credit her on the posters
- It will be beneficial to shoot Chris first to get his first-hand account on what he expects of the project
- this will enable us to ask appropriate questions to the students when we interview them
- Erin emailed Chris to get a date for when we can film an interview with him
- Chris will have to give us a date and time when we can do this
- We will only need 30 minutes of his time, but we will need additional time to set up
- Erin will see where Chris wants to do the interview
- We will look to film him in his office, but may also try some B-roll footage of him walking to class, doing work, etc.
- Chris will have to give us a date and time when we can do this

TLT Symposium Marketing Committee Meeting 1/15/2009
Revised video intro “coverflow”
- Covers go by a little quickly.
- Eyes try to focus when the covers stop. This becomes distracting.
- More fluid movement
- does not need to go past the Chris Brady cover
- scrolling starts out fast and slows down to a stop on Chris Brady
- Cover images could be closer together
- overlap each other
- don’t see the entire images of the covers that aren’t in the center of the screen
- Do we need to see the black bars above and below each video?
- Where are the other images in the cover coming from?
- we don’t want to use images only from the Chris Brady video
Stuart Selber interview
The interview questions for the students would be similar to the questions that we did for Chris Brady’s video
