Meeting Notes - October 2, 2008

Hi, Jeff. Here is what I would like the Program Committee to cover as it regards to marketing for the Symposium:

The marketing campaign has been approved. We need to begin the following: • Identify faculty who are assigning student projects that fit with our theme and the "Reimagine" concept - we are looking at doing 5 to 7 of these features - we want to have only 1 or 2 be from UP

• We may want to start with the UP one since we want to create a template of how these will be done. I would like to come out of the Program meeting tomorrow with a faculty name that we can contact. - this name should not be anyone who was involved in our campaign last year - this should be a student project that we can document with photos and a video story to be placed onto the Symposium site

Potential Faculty to Profile

Chris Brady, Schreyer Honors College

Schreyer Honors College Portfolio Blogging Project Education Technology Services (ETS) is working with the Schreyer Honors College (SHC) to investigate the use of the Penn State blogging platform to support student portfolio and ongoing reflection. As part of this initiative, SHC scholars will be supported by members of ETS as we jointly explore the impact of personal publishing on academic advising, personal reflection, and personal content management. Scholars will be asked to maintain a blog (powered by the Blogs at PSU) to track reflections of their work as students at Penn State. Categories will be used to help better organize reflections and to align them with SHC programmatic goals and outcomes. Additionally, SHC scholars' faculty advisors will be asked to participate by periodically tracking scholar progress via their blogs.

Stuart Selber, ENGL 202C

English 202C Course Redesign Project Stuart Selber has asked that Penn State’s composition program be brought into the 21st Century. There is currently very little technology being used beyond word processing and faculty would like the opportunity to use multimedia for composition—even moving entirely digital for an assignment. Most assignments are currently completed individually through approximately six papers per semester. Instructors would also like the possibility of incorporating team assignments into the process. This project will start with a focus on English 202C with the possibility to move to future projects for English 202A, B, D and English 15.

The purpose of Education Technology Services’ (ETS) participation in this project is to help conceptualize what changes are possible and determine how to approach them. This will be achieved by providing technological expertise and aiding in instructor familiarization with multiple technologies and their various uses. ETS will also assist with obtaining the technology required for successful implementation of the pilot project.

Michael Moore, ADTED 531

Course Design and Development in Distance Education Dr. Moore and Will Diehl worked to incorporate Web 2.0 technologies into this distance education course.

Additional Notes

Karen Hackett will check with the IT Directors, Tom Irwin, and Jim Leous to see if they have any suggestions

Meeting Notes - September 4, 2008

We are "cautiously optimistic" regarding keynote speakers. We have heard back from both Wiley and Boyd. Both are ironing out last-minute details but are planning on being here.

YouTube Video Clip ideas: Maybe come up with the framework we'd like and then put that up as a demo and solicit responses from others. We are discussing making our own video and recording during a meeting time. http://animoto.com - Online tool to create video (can use still images/music) We should work to show 'different' ideas in the video (use the 'Community' YouTube video as an example. Use students, TLAs, keep it informal and casual. Karen will come up with some examples of "reImagining Symposium" to be filmed/recorded at the next meeting. Ideas will be listed on the Big Ideas page.

E-textbook panel Two firm commitments (funding) from textbook manufacturers. Still working out details, but panel discussion will take place -"the future of textbooks" Possibly involve Wiley in the panel discussion, along w/ students. We will start to develop the wiki page specifically for the textbook panel. Richard will take the lead on this.

We will be looking at the poster session and reimagining what that will mean. Students creating in digital commons and sharing those creations at the poster session, etc.

We reviewed the session proposal form from last year: Instead of limiting to proposals from faculty and students, we discussed the idea of keeping it open to the Penn State Community including faculty, staff, students and alumni. We've discussed live-streaming and bringing in students and alumni from other areas as well. "As part of this year's theme we are looking for proposals that encourage the reimagination of:... " We discussed putting the date, time, and details toward the bottom of the paragraph and use the first line to catch the attention of people and get them excited about the possibilities of reimagining these ideas.

We should make an extra effort to keep some 'nuts and bolts' discussions as part of the symposium for people who are just now beginning to explore the possibilities of using technology in their classrooms.

We talked about having some dinner options on Friday and on Saturday evening. We'll handle this like the Learning Design Summer Camp where people can sign up on the wiki to dine with folks discussing topics of interest.

We also talked about having session presenters and dinner 'hosts' create a short video talking about what they will present and/or discuss in their session. This will encourage creativity and will make sessions more personalized and exciting. We discussed encouraging people to submit a short video clip with their proposal.

Meeting Notes - August 21, 2008

Viewed the mock-ups of the different marketing posters. Like the look and feel of the person pictured with a sketched background because it leans more toward the theme of imagining. Causes the viewer to have to imagine what the background of the scene could look like.

We want media to come from multiple directions so capturing media in the field and coming back and doing some minimal editing is a great way to go. Also getting people to contribute their own pieces. Helps us promote the Web 2.0 we want.

Capture the committee or marketing meetings and post as YouTube to show the openness of planning. Allow others to contribute videos also for means of feedback, etc. Could ask, "What has technology allowed you to reimagine?" Could ask committee members and others, "What does reimagining student engagement mean to you?" This could get the community started.

From the Marketing Notes Wiki page:

Marketing pieces

Would like the highlighted concept to be action-oriented and something that can be personalized.

Similar to last year with the open white background

--can put distance --can put face-to-face --lectures --portfolios --key term we've been highlighting --time (synchronous v. asynchrounous) --“Lectures” “Distance” “Contribution”

For marketing pieces we need to decide on a few main tag topics. Suggested we keep them umbrella topics such as Collaboration, Communication, Motivation, Contribution, where we can put other topics under to display different ways of using them. Thought everything could end in -tion but suggested that we keep "Community" because it is a key term... also "e-Portfolio" and "Distance" because they are so huge. Also suggested that the words used be action-oriented (-ing?) and something that can be personalized.

Should we "Reimagine the poster session?"
