Overview
Why Would I Want to Use Flickr or Del.icio.us?
Flickr
- When you want to find Creative Commons Licensed photos for use in a course. Flickr's advanced search capability allows you to designate licensing options as well as keywords: http://www.flickr.com/search/advanced/
- When you want to create community around a topic where photos make sense to share. For example, an architecture class might create a Flickr group (or join a larger one) where photos of particular architectural types might reside.
- To create a photo repository on any topic/subject.
- When you want to offer short (90 second) videos on anything from How-to's to introductions to more ephemeral concepts. http://www.flickr.com/photos/tarabrown/2487834877/
- When students create short videos for class, this is a good way to keep them out of Angel (and thus out of the 1GB course limit). YouTube (which Cole will be discussing) is also good for this. http://www.flickr.com/photos/ciro/2610019719/
Del.icio.us
- When links change and you don't want to alter your course materials all the time to keep updated. For example, you can create a tag for a course, and simply link to your del.icio.us account via that tag. Then the bookmarks are gathered automatically. IST's SRA111 Bookmarks
- When you want students to send links to you as well. Have them send them via del.icio.us
- When you want to create an evolving resource together, tagging is a really good way to do it
- Any list created in del.icio.us can be aggregated using RSS.
Implications for Teaching and Learning
- Portability--when students need to move from computer to computer, their bookmarks go with them.
- Collaborative Resource Development--Both Flickr and Del.icio.us allow you to collect resources of a specific type (links or images/video)
- students can "send" resources to the group in the system, or just to the instructor, and if tagged appropriately, everyone gets a current resource that's constantly updated
- distributed resources. If students/faculty agree on lexicon, then students can aggregate their own resources in Flickr or Del.icio.us and use the tags to find all the resources tagged by everyone.
- used to build collective intelligence
- connect with individuals and experts outside of the classroom
