PRECONFERENCE WORKSHOP ON DIGITAL LITERACIES The University Libraries and Digital Commons are jointly hosting a pre-conference workshop on Developing Literacies for Student Digital Media Activities. It will be held Monday, July 20th, from 1-5pm in Mann Assembly Room in Paterno Library. This interactive, half-day workshop will uncover the essential components of student multimedia assignments. In a hands-on environment, attendees will create a video narrative exploring a historical event.

The workshop will address:

The intended audience is faculty, instructional designers, and anyone involved in designing, implementing, or supporting student digital media projects. Workshop Outline

  1. Overview of workshop
  2. Conceptual overview of digital literacies and educational digital media
    1. The state of digital media in education
    2. Open discussion: What skills do you think you and your students need to complete a successful digital media project?
  3. Digital Literacies in Depth
    1. Student digital literacy acquisition in the multimedia creation process
  4. Copyright, Fair Use, Creative Commons, etc.
  5. Library research skills
    1. Activity: finding library materials (images, video, articles and more) for digital storytelling project
      1. Hot topic resources: CQ Researcher; Opposing Viewpoints; ProQuest
      2. AP Accunet Photo Archive
      3. Vanderbilt TV Archive
      4. ArtStor
      5. Penn State Digital Collections
    2. Activity: Finding legal media for project
  6. Digital Storytelling
    1. Conceptual overview (narrative process relative to explaining the context and impact of a historical event, learning benefits)
    2. Activity: Digital Storytelling
      1. (this activity will be similar to our existing storytelling workshop, updated with Library-related content)
      2. Attendees will choose a historical event to explore and document through digital storytelling, finding relevant media that explains and highlights their selected event.

Workshop timeline and assignments

  1. 1 - 1:10 pm. Introduction and overview of workshop and relation to other fellowship projects (Ellysa and Chris)
  2. 1:10 - 1:30 pm. Open discussion: What skills do students need to complete a successful digital media project / convergence of literacies (Ellysa and Chris)
  3. 1:30 - 1:40 pm. Overview of digital storytelling (in context of historical narrative) (Chris)
  4. 1:40 - 3:00 Library resources / Creative Commons / Fair Use / Copyright
    1. Discuss copyright /fair use issues within the context of finding images in AP Photo Archive (Four fair use factors) (Ellysa/Chris)
      1. Basics of library resources -- finding images / video and other media for use in projects
      2. Hands on activity: Using the AP Photo Archive to find images for the historical narrative
    2. Hands on activity: Demonstrate other relevant resources (Vanderbilt TV Archive) / solicit attendees' recommended resources (Ellysa)
    3. Discuss Creative Commons / freely available resources (Hannah)
      1. Hands on activity: Search freely available resources for images for narrative (if there is time)
  5. 3:00 - 3:30 pm. Break / refreshments
  6. 3:30 - 4:30 pm. Intro. to iMovie / Kaltura (Kim / Hannah / Chris)
