- Location: " Paterno Mann Assembly Room with mobile laptop lab setup (sound ok? I looked and Mann (where the last Digital Storytelling workshop in the Libraries was held) is free all day on the 20th.

PRECONFERENCE WORKSHOP ON DIGITAL LITERACIES The University Libraries and Digital Commons are jointly hosting a pre-conference workshop on Developing Literacies for Student Digital Media Activities. It will be held Monday, July 20th, from 1-5pm in Mann Assembly Room in Paterno Library. This interactive, half-day workshop will uncover the essential components of student multimedia assignments. In a hands-on environment, attendees will create a video narrative exploring a historical event.
The workshop will address:
- Digital storytelling, including the use of a variety of authoring tools to create a video-based narrative
- Appropriate, accessible pedagogy for multimedia course assignments
- Student digital literacy acquisition in the multimedia creation process
- Library research skills / finding digital resources online, including the use of video and image collections from the Penn State Libraries and open access collections
- The essentials of Creative Commons, copyright issues and Fair Use
The intended audience is faculty, instructional designers, and anyone involved in designing, implementing, or supporting student digital media projects. - Activity: Finding legal media for project

- Conceptual overview (narrative process relative to explaining the context and impact of a historical event, learning benefits)
- Activity: Digital Storytelling
- (this activity will be similar to our existing storytelling workshop, updated with Library-related content)
- Attendees will choose a historical event to explore and document through digital storytelling, finding relevant media that explains and highlights their selected event.

Workshop timeline and assignments
- 1 - 1:10 pm. Introduction and overview of workshop and relation to other fellowship projects (Ellysa and Chris)
- 1:10 - 1:30 pm. Open discussion: What skills do students need to complete a successful digital media project / convergence of literacies (Ellysa and Chris)
- 1:30 - 1:40 pm. Overview of digital storytelling (in context of historical narrative) (Chris)
- 1:40 - 3:00 Library resources / Creative Commons / Fair Use / Copyright
- Discuss copyright /fair use issues within the context of finding images in AP Photo Archive (Four fair use factors) (Ellysa/Chris)
- Basics of library resources -- finding images / video and other media for use in projects
- Hands on activity: Using the AP Photo Archive to find images for the historical narrative
- Hands on activity: Demonstrate other relevant resources (Vanderbilt TV Archive) / solicit attendees' recommended resources (Ellysa)
- Discuss Creative Commons / freely available resources (Hannah)
- Hands on activity: Search freely available resources for images for narrative (if there is time)
- Discuss copyright /fair use issues within the context of finding images in AP Photo Archive (Four fair use factors) (Ellysa/Chris)
